| Do I need an appointment to
see a tutor? |
| No. Walk-ins are always welcome; however, if you want
to be sure that you can see a tutor, you should make an
appointment in advance. |
| How do I make
an appointment? |
You can make an appointment one of two
ways:
- Come into the Writing Center and make an appointment
with the person on duty at the reception desk. There
is usually a person on duty Monday through Friday 9:00
a.m. to 5:30 p.m. In the evenings and on weekends,
no receptionist is on duty.
- Call the Writing Center Monday
through Friday 9:00 to 5:30 p.m. The Writing Center
phone number is (714) 992-5385.
|
| How long are
tutoring appointments? |
| Tutoring sessions are 30 minutes. In a
few cases, tutors may extend the session longer if the
tutor thinks it would be beneficial and if there are no
students waiting. Please arrive a few minutes early
to check in at the reception desk. |
| Can I go longer
or shorter? |
| In a few cases, tutors may extend the
session longer if the tutor thinks it would be beneficial
and if there are no students waiting. Tutors and tutees
both find that session that are less than 30 minutes are
not as productive or effective; therefore, if you are unable
to attend for the full session, please cancel and reschedule
for another time. |
| How many appointments
may I have in one day? |
| In order to accommodate as many students
as possible, the Writing Center limits students to making
one appointment per day. |
| How far in advance
may I make an appointment? |
| You may schedule appointments for the
current week plus the following week. |
| What if I can’t
keep my appointment? |
| If you have made an appointment and are
unable to keep it, you should contact the Writing
Center as soon as possible to cancel your appointment.
This will allow the Writing Center to clear the appointment
slot for another student. |
| What happens
if I forget my appointment? |
| If you forget your appointment and do
not notify the Writing Center or notify the Writing Center
after the appointed time, you will be marked as a "no
show". If you are marked as a "no show" more
than once, you will no longer be able to schedule appointments
for the current semester. However, you may use the
Writing Center on a walk-in basis. |
| Why do I have
to scan in and out at every visit? |
| Scanning in and out of your session
helps Fullerton College to keep track of the number of
students that use the Writing Center and the amount of
time these students use the Writing Center. A
portion of the funding for the Writing Center is based
on the utilization of the center. It benefits both
the Writing Center and the student for there to be accurate
recording of Writing Center usage. |
|
|
| What should
I bring to my tutoring session? |
| Bring the assignment prompt from you instructor,
a pen or pencil, a draft of your essay if you have one,
and any questions or concerns you have. If you are
using outside sources for your assignment, it would be
helpful to bring your sources as well. |
| What should
I do when I arrive at the Writing Center? |
| When you arrive at the Writing Center,
you should first check in at the reception desk. The
person at the reception desk will show you where to sign
in, show you how to scan in, give you a brief questionnaire
to fill out, and direct you to your tutor. |
| What happens
during a tutoring session? |
| Typically during a tutoring session, the
tutor will want to know what you are working on, what step
you are at in the writing process, and the specific concerns
or issues you would like to address. The tutor will
then usually ask you to read your paper out loud. The
tutor will listen and read silently along with you. After
you finish reading your essay, the tutor will discuss your
essay with you and help you to address some of your concerns
with the essay. These may include issues with development,
organization, analysis and patterns of errors. |
| Why don’t
tutors correct and edit my work for me? |
| The Writing Center is not an editing or
proofreading service. The main role of the tutor
is to help students become better writers through a dialogue
of the ideas in the student’s essay and through assisting
in development, organization and analysis of the essay. Even
though tutors will not correct or edit an essay for you,
they can help you develop the skills and strategies to
locate and fix your own errors if you would like. Although
the focus of a session is usually on a student’s
paper, the end goal is to improve the writer and not the
paper. |
| Why do tutors
have me read my essay out loud? |
| Reading the essay out loud is helpful
to both the student and the tutor. Reading out loud
often helps students find errors in their writing they
may otherwise miss. In addition, for ESL students,
it is a chance to practice speaking English. Also,
while the student reads the essay out loud, the tutor can
focus on listening to the ideas of the essay in order to
think of questions and comments to help the student. |
| Do I need to
read my entire essay out loud? |
| Depending on the focus of the session
and the length of the paper, it may not be necessary to
read the whole essay. Reading a ten page paper out
loud would take up the entire session. In that case,
the tutor will most likely ask you to read the thesis statement,
topic sentences and whatever areas are of particular concern
to you. |
|
|
| What should
I do when the session is over? |
| During the last five minutes of your session,
you will fill out the remainder of the questionnaire including
the question, "What are your plans for revision?" This
is a valuable opportunity to help guide you as you continue
to revise your essay. You will then need to scan
out before leaving the Writing Center. You can also
make an appointment for future tutoring sessions at the
reception desk. |
| How will I know
what I should work on after the session? |
| Normally, students may write out notes
and comments during the tutoring session. These notes
are especially helpful to the student when he/she continues
revising their essay after the tutoring session. Also,
during the last few minutes of the session, the student
and tutor will summarize what they discussed in the session. The
tutor might also help the student formulate a plan on what
to do next with the essay. |
| What if I want
to continue working with a tutor? |
| Currently, tutors adhere to the thirty
minute appointment schedule. However, while only
one appointment per day is allowed, once you work on the
suggestions generated during your tutoring session, you
may request a walk in appointment later that day. If
there is a tutor available, you can get additional assistance. |
| Will my instructor
know I came to the Writing Center? |
| Yes. The Writing Center keeps records
of all visits and notifies faculty when their students
have completed a tutorial. In addition, you will complete
a pink Writing Center Tutorial Record that you can submit
to your instructor if you wish. WC tutors will sign this
paper as a way to verify your attendance. |
| Can my time
in the Writing Center fulfill the minutes I need in the
Skills Center? |
| No. Although the Writing Center
and Skills Center are housed in the same building, they
are two separate entities. The work you do in the
Skills Center is much different than the tutoring sessions
you participate in at the Writing Center. The work
assigned at the Skills Center is usually self-paced and
focuses on certain skills an instructor requires a student
to learn whereas the emphasis at the Writing Center is
meeting with a tutor to discuss an essay you wrote. |
| Besides tutoring,
are there any other services that the Writing Center
offers? |
| Yes. In addition to tutoring, the
Writing Center offers writing workshops throughout the
semester. These workshops range in diversity of topics. You
can see the workshops that are offered for the current
semester by clicking on Writing Center Workshops. Also,
there are computers in the Writing Center you may use to
work on for any of your writing assignments. You
may also print at the Writing Center if you have a print
account. |
